Homemade beef stew seasoning mix is the way to go. You get all the same deep, delicious flavor with spices from your pantry without any added nonsense. Eight pantry staple ingredients, a few minutes, and it’s ready to cook. This blend adds richness, warmth, and depth to every dish. It seasons about two pounds of meat perfectly, giving you a balanced flavor without overpowering the vegetables or broth. It’s simple, versatile, and ideal to keep on hand for quick, cozy meals.

Tips for Beginners

  • Fresh vs. dried herbs. If you prefer fresh herbs, use triple the amount of fresh rosemary or thyme since dried herbs are more concentrated. Crush the rosemary and thyme between your fingers before adding them. This wakes up the herbs and gives the seasoning a deeper, more aromatic flavor.
  • Coat the beef evenly. Make sure the beef is coated evenly with the seasoning mix. The flour helps thicken the stew as it cooks, so an even layer keeps it silky instead of clumpy.
  • Brown the beef. Brown the seasoned beef in a hot pan before simmering. This quick step adds rich, caramelized flavor that makes the whole pot taste so much heartier.
  • Adjust the taste. If your stew tastes a little flat at the end, adjust the salt or stir in a small splash of Worcestershire sauce to brighten and deepen the overall flavor.

Ingredients1x2x3x

  • ▢ 2 tbsp flour
  • ▢ 2 tsp salt
  • ▢ 2 tsp garlic powder
  • ▢ 2 tsp onion powder
  • ▢ 2 tsp dried rosemary
  • ▢ 2 tsp dried thyme
  • ▢ 1 tsp paprika
  • ▢ 1 tsp pepper

Instructions

  • Add the ingredients to a bowl or jar and whisk to combine. 2 tbsp flour, 2 tsp salt, 2 tsp garlic powder, 2 tsp onion powder, 2 tsp dried rosemary, 2 tsp dried thyme, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp pepper
  • Use half of the seasoning mix for one batch of beef stew (about 2 pounds of meat).
  • Toss the seasoning in the stew meat, coating entirely.
  • Store the remaining seasoning in an airtight container.

Becky’s Tips

  • The best cuts of meat to use with this seasoning are well-marbled options like chuck roast, pre-cut beef stew meat, or boneless short ribs . These cuts become tender and flavorful as they cook low and slow, and the seasoning blend adds a rich, savory base that complements them perfectly.
  • Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free flour or cornstarch.
  • Add heat by mixing in cayenne or chili flakes.

Season the beef: Use half of the seasoning mix for one beef stew recipe (about 2 lbs of meat). Sprinkle it over the beef and toss until each piece is fully coated. Transfer the remaining half of the seasoning to an airtight container or spice jar and store it in your pantry.

How to Store

Store the seasoning mix in an airtight jar or container in a cool, dry pantry for up to six months. Keep it away from heat and light so the herbs and spices stay fresh and flavorful. If you like to meal prep, make a double or triple batch and label the jar so it’s easy to grab whenever you’re making stew.

Serving Suggestions

I reach for this seasoning mix any time I’m making a cozy pot of classic beef stew . It’s perfect for an instant pot beef stew for a quick dump-and-go recipe. I even sprinkle it over red wine pot roast and beef tips , and sometimes I use a spoonful to season ground beef for a quick skillet dinner. The mix pairs perfectly with all the stew essentials like carrots, roasted potatoes , mushrooms, onions, and peas, and it’s a staple in my fall and winter meal prep when I want something warm and comforting without a lot of effort.
